A welcoming rally for Ahmad Al-Sharaa in New York sparks controversy within the Syrian community

A number of members of the Syrian community in the United States are preparing to organize a welcoming rally in New York on September 23, 2026, coinciding with the participation of the head of the Syrian transitional authority, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, in the meetings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to the published announcement for the event, the gathering is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. near the UN headquarters, on an occasion that organizers say aims to show support for Syria’s presence and representation on the international stage.

However, the invitation has sparked debate within segments of the Syrian community, as critics believe that holding a celebratory gathering to receive the head of the transitional authority could be understood as an expression of personal support for Al-Sharaa or as a form of glorifying the ruler, at a time when the transitional phase in Syria is still the subject of wide discussion among Syrians.

In a clarification to VOS – Voice of Syria, one of the event’s organizers, Hamid Al-Imam, said that the aim of the rally, as he put it, is not to support Ahmad Al-Sharaa in his personal capacity, but rather “to support the legitimacy of the Syrian state and its institutions and their representation before the international community.”

This controversy comes a year after a similar scene witnessed in New York during the UN General Assembly meetings in 2025. At that time, hundreds of Syrians gathered near the headquarters of the international organization to welcome Al-Sharaa during his first participation in the General Assembly, while another gathering was held by opponents of his policies and his presence at the United Nations.

Participants in the opposing rally carried banners and pictures criticizing Al-Sharaa’s past and his previous relationship with jihadist organizations, in addition to slogans related to the violent events that took place in the Syrian coast and Suwayda Governorate during the transitional phase. Press reports documented the presence of pro- and anti-Al-Sharaa demonstrators on both sides of the barriers, with chants and insults exchanged between some participants.

Al-Sharaa addressed the General Assembly on September 24, 2025, in the first speech delivered by a Syrian president before the General Assembly in nearly six decades, an event accompanied by both supportive and opposing gatherings outside the UN headquarters.

Preparations for this year’s rally revive the same question within the Syrian community: Where does support for the state and its institutions end, and where does political support for the ruler as a person begin?

The organizers of the rally believe that appearing in front of the United Nations carries a message related to the unity of the Syrian state and its return to international institutions, while critics fear that national occasions may turn into events linked to individuals rather than institutions.

Between these two positions, the experience of last year remains present, after the public division in front of the UN headquarters revealed the extent of political and social differences within Syrian society, and the verbal friction between demonstrators led to a scene that some participants considered damaging to the image of Syrians before the media and the international public.

With the approach of the September 23 event, the challenge facing participants from various orientations will be to express their political positions in a peaceful manner that preserves the right to differ, without allowing the dispute over the transitional authority to turn into a new confrontation between Syrians abroad.
