Did the Umayyads spread Islam during their conquests?

By: Ahmad Al-Rammah

Before answering this question; someone objected to my previous article (“Do the Umayyads Deserve Credit for Spreading Islam in Greater Syria and Its Arab Identity?”), claiming that the Umayyads were the ones who brought Greater Syria and the rest of the miserable East (the Arab world today) into Islam! Before responding to this claim, which contradicts the truth according to all historical references, two points must be quickly clarified:

First: There is a vast difference between the Islam represented by Muhammad ﷺ and the Islam represented by those who took power after him.

Second: My primary concern is the true religion; and I criticize anything that harms this religion, whoever does it, no matter who they are. As “Ali ib
n Abi Talib” said: Truth is not known by men; know the truth, and you will know its people.

Back to our question: Did the Umayyads spread Islam during their conquests?
The conquest of the Maghreb in the 7th and 8th centuries AD did not lead to its inhabitants embracing Islam immediately; Christianity and local religions remained present among the population for several centuries. Muslims likely became a demographic majority in Ifriqiya (modern-day Tunisia) in the late 9th century AD, that is, about 200 years after the Umayyads entered it militarily!
As for Algeria (the central Maghreb) and Morocco, they began to Islamize during the 10th and 11th centuries! Muslims did not become a wide-ranging majority until the 11th–12th centuries AD, i.e., about five centuries after the Umayyad military entry!!

As for Egypt, the Umayyads took control of it with the fall of Alexandria in 642 AD; Egypt did not enter Islam until the end of the 4th Hijri century / 10th–11th century AD! That is, about 400 years after the Umayyad military entered it! And it was not so much a doctrinal shift as it was economic coercion (jizya, kharaj, and taxation) that occurred during the Fatimid period, and most Christians in Egypt freed themselves from it by declaring their conversion to Islam and abandoning Christianity.

Some will say: This is proof that they did not force the population to convert to Islam!
This is not true! On the contrary, the reputation of Arabs and Islam, due to Umayyad behavior, was very low; refer to the books that discussed religious conversion in Egypt and North Africa; they contain testimonies that make one’s cheeks burn with shame!

As for the conduct of the Umayyad military in Egypt and North Africa, here is a small sample for you, who are enamored with the Umayyads and deny the historical truth: At the University of Cambridge there is an academic reference titled “Cambridge History of Africa” which affirms that the books “Futuh Ifriqiya wa al-Maghrib wa al-Andalus” (The Conquests of Ifriqiya, the Maghreb, and al-Andalus) by Ibn Abd al-Hakam, who was an Arab Qurayshi, and his other book “Futuh Misr wa Akhbaruha” (The Conquests of Egypt and Its Accounts) are the most reliable historical references regarding those lands during their (Arab conquest).

Let us listen to some of what Ibn Abd al-Hakam said about the conduct of the Umayyad troops: “Musa ibn Nusair” sent his son “Marwan” with an army to the Maghreb, and he took 100,000 captives, then he sent his nephew with another army and he took another 100,000 captives! This number is serious! As “Cambridge” says, and exaggerated.
The more important question here is: Did the captivity include women and children?

The same academic studies say that Arab armies, from the beginning of the “conquests,” imposed jizya on some of the defeated populations and narrate instances in which sons and daughters were sold to provide the money required for the tax. They also indicate that a large number of “Berber” captives were transported to Egypt and from there to other regions.

In Ibn Abd al-Hakam’s account in his book “Futuh Ifriqiya wa al-Maghrib wa al-Andalus” about “Hassan ibn al-Nu‘man,” he states that he took Berber women as captives and lists high prices for some of them. “Al-Baladhuri” confirms this in his book “Futuh al-Buldan” (The Conquests of Lands). These are two early Arab sources, not a single late report.

Al-Baladhuri in “Futuh al-Buldan,” in his report on the conquest of Barqa, with his chain of transmission, says: “Amr ibn al-‘As” wrote in his conditions upon the people of “Lawata” from the “Berbers” of (Barqa): that you must sell your sons and your women to pay what is due from you in jizya! Then al-Baladhuri immediately comments, quoting al-Layth objecting: “If they had been slaves, that would not have been permissible from them.” So is such behavior Qur’anically, ethically, and humanly acceptable from a man said to be a companion?

Ibn Abd al-Hakam relates regarding the campaigns of “Musa ibn Nusair”: “He dispatched raiding parties until his cavalry reached al-Sus al-Adna, where he trampled them and took them as captives… and he sent Busr ibn Abi Arta to a fortress three days’ distance from (al-Qayrawan), and he took it by force, and took the offspring (children) as captives and seized the wealth!”

What is very important in this text is that it portrays the “conquerors” in the name of Islam as inhuman colonizers who did not abide at all by the humane teachings of the Qur’an!

In “Futuh Misr wa Akhbaruha” Ibn Abd al-Hakam relates that after “Hassan ibn al-Nu‘man’s” conquests in Ifriqiya, “Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan” took captives from him. He says: “He had come with a number of Berber concubines the like of whose beauty had never been seen… I witnessed the captives that Abd al-Aziz had taken from Hassan: two hundred maidens, some of whom were valued at a thousand dinars.”

It must be noted that the text does not say that these represent the total number of captives, but rather mentions a specific group that reached “Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan.”

Ibn Kathir in “Al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya” (The Beginning and the End), in his biography of “Musa ibn Nusair,” reports that he arrived in Damascus with thirty thousand captives. He and Ibn Abd al-Hakam and al-Baladhuri speak of the beauty of Amazigh women, and that the poet “Abu Mihjan” said he saw among the captives with Abd al-Aziz “captives from the Berbers; never had I seen faces more beautiful than theirs.”

“Al-Raqiq al-Qayrawani” in his book “Tarikh Ifriqiya wa al-Maghrib” (History of Ifriqiya and the Maghreb) states: when “Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik” assumed the caliphate, it became clear that he was more obsessed and crazed with sex than his father! The first thing the new caliph did was to send a letter to his governor in the Amazigh lands, asking him to send more beautiful Amazigh captives to Damascus… In this ominous letter, Caliph “Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik” specified the characteristics of the women he preferred, describing in meticulous detail the body of the desired woman from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet, with particular focus on the sensitive areas!

Is this how they spread Islam?

Ibn Khaldun narrates in his history that when “Musa ibn Nusair” invaded the lands of the Amazigh (North Africa) to spread Islam, he took 100,000 heads as captives. This is considered the largest single slave-taking operation in the history of Islamic wars.

In Egypt, as a result of “Amr ibn al-‘As” exhausting the Egyptians with tax, land tax, and jizya, the Copts of Egypt complained about his taxes and economic policy, which overburdened them. They sent a delegation to “Umar ibn al-Khattab,” who became angry and said to “Amr” in a letter his immortal words: “Do not beat people so that you humiliate them, and do not deprive them so that you make them disbelieve! Since when have you enslaved people when their mothers bore them free?” He intended to dismiss him, but death overtook him first. When “Uthman ibn Affan” became caliph, he dismissed him and appointed his foster brother “Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh” (the one driven out by the Messenger of God), who wronged the people of Egypt and Sudan even more! Alexandria revolted against him, so he removed him and restored “Amr” to the governorship.

Mikhail the Syrian, Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church in the Middle Ages, relates in his book (The Arab Conquests in the Accounts of the Vanquished) that Muʿawiya ibn Abi Sufyan said, while leading the campaign that followed his seizure of Caesarea in Palestine: “We are going up to a land full of gold and of wealth of every kind. God has placed these lands in our hands because of the sins of their inhabitants!!!”

There is much more to say on this subject; and if you wanted more I would add more and more. So bring me a country the Umayyads entered, where they called people to Islam and its inhabitants embraced Islam during the Umayyad state, which lasted for a little less than a century!

Islam is one thing; Muslims are something else. It is not possible to defend individuals or a group in exchange for accusing Islam. Will you, then, desist?

The article was adapted from the book by Ahmad al-Romh (Will We One Day Apologize for the Conquests?).
