“Flydubai” incident: What happened in the cockpit, and why does the story go beyond a mere quarrel between two pilots?

An ordinary Flydubai flight between Dubai and Tel Aviv on the morning of Wednesday, 30 September 2026, turned into one of the most serious civil aviation incidents in the region in recent years, after a violent confrontation in the cockpit forced the aircraft to change course and make an emergency landing in the Saudi city of Tabuk.

But what happened on board flight FZ1073 still raises more questions than answers, especially regarding the motives behind the incident, and how such a dangerous struggle could occur inside the cockpit of a commercial airliner flying at tens of thousands of feet.

Flydubai confirmed that an “altercation” took place inside the cockpit during the flight from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport, and that members of the company’s crew who were traveling on board managed to bring the situation under control before diverting the flight and landing safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Emirati authorities also confirmed that there were injuries among the crew and that the injured were taken to hospital.

Data from the Flightradar24 website show that the aircraft, a Boeing 737, was cruising at about 34,000 feet before it began a series of sharp descents and climbs. The aircraft also transmitted the code 7700 indicating a general emergency, then the code 7500 used internationally to signal unlawful interference or a hijacking situation, before reverting again to the general emergency code.

According to tracking data, the aircraft lost more than 14,000 feet of altitude within a very short period during the most critical phase of the incident, before control was regained and the flight continued toward Tabuk.

Attempt to bring down the aircraft

Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said that the co‑pilot attacked the captain and stabbed him, then tried to seize control of the aircraft and force it into a descent, considering that what happened may have been a deliberate attempt to bring down the aircraft.

Passengers told international media outlets about a violent struggle inside the cockpit, while video clips verified by Reuters showed two crew members injured after the situation was brought under control.

But describing what happened as a terrorist act has not yet been proven by the results of an official investigation.

The UAE Public Prosecution announced on 1 October the formation of a specialized investigation team, explaining that the investigation will look not only into the details of the incident, but also its motives, and whether it was linked to terrorist activity or to prior planning or direction from another party. The authorities explicitly called on everyone not to prejudge the results of the investigation.

And this is a key point: the occurrence of an assault inside the cockpit is now supported by several sources, but the motive behind it is still under investigation.

How was the aircraft saved?

Perhaps the most important aspect of the incident is the presence of additional Flydubai crew members on the flight. The airline said that a crew belonging to it was traveling on the aircraft, intervened and took control of the situation, and that an alternate crew carried out the safe landing in Tabuk. This means that the presence of qualified pilots outside the cockpit may have been a decisive factor in preventing the incident from turning into a catastrophe. Published accounts also indicate that passengers intervened during the confrontation, but determining who did what and at what moment still awaits the final official report.

The FZ1073 incident reopens one of the most difficult files in civil aviation security: what happens when the potential danger comes from a person already authorized to enter the cockpit? Since the 11 September 2001 attacks, most aviation security measures have focused on preventing unauthorized individuals from entering the cockpit. But the Flydubai incident presents a completely different scenario, because armored doors and security lock systems become less effective if the threat arises inside the cockpit itself.

Therefore, an important part of the investigations will focus on a number of questions: How did the confrontation start? What tool was used in it? Were there prior indications of a threat? And was the incident a planned act, or a sudden individual behavior?

The Israeli side also announced tighter screening procedures for pilots operating flights to Israel after the incident, in a sign that the repercussions of the event may not stop at Flydubai’s boundaries.

Why is the landing in Saudi Arabia important?

There is also a notable geopolitical aspect to the story. The flight was heading from the UAE to Israel, but it found itself in an emergency over the region and had to land in Saudi Arabia, whose authorities dealt with the injured, the aircraft, and the passengers, despite the absence of fully declared diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Here, aviation safety rules and emergency response took precedence over political considerations, and Saudi Arabia became a direct party in managing an incident involving a UAE aircraft carrying passengers bound for Israel. The incident is also expected to take on a political and media dimension, especially in Israel, where officials quickly used the term “terrorism” and linked the event to the security of Israelis.

Professionally, however, three levels must be distinguished:

First: the occurrence of a serious confrontation inside the cockpit, and this is established.

Second: the possibility that one of the pilots deliberately attempted to endanger the aircraft, which is supported by multiple testimonies and accounts but still requires full confirmation by the investigation.

Third: a terrorist or political motive, which has not yet been determined.

Defining this distinction is essential because moving the narrative from “assault” to “attempt to bring down an aircraft,” and then from “attempt to bring down” to “terrorist operation,” requires additional evidence at each stage.

The most important outcome so far is that the aircraft landed safely and flight FZ1073 did not turn into an air disaster. But the success of the crew and passengers in containing the crisis does not diminish the gravity of what occurred. It is rare for the cockpit of a passenger aircraft to become the scene of a physical confrontation while the plane is in the air, and even more dangerous when this coincides with a rapid loss of altitude and the transmission of emergency and unlawful interference signals.

Therefore, the real question is no longer only: what happened on board the Flydubai aircraft?

But also: how did it happen? And were the safety systems capable of detecting the danger before the aircraft took off?

The answers to these questions will determine whether the world is facing an exceptional, isolated incident, or a security loophole that may prompt airlines and regulatory authorities to reconsider some cockpit security rules and the screening of aviation sector personnel.
