Explosion of gas pipeline in Damascus countryside disables three power stations.. technical incident or new targeting of infrastructure?

On Wednesday evening, the Tishreen thermal power station in eastern Damascus countryside witnessed an explosion in the gas pipeline that supplies it, which led to a large fire and the shutdown of three main power generation plants, in an incident that refocused attention on the fragility of Syria’s energy infrastructure.

The Syrian Electricity Company said the explosion led to the interruption of gas supplies to the Tishreen, Deir Ali, and al-Nasiriya stations, causing a decrease in the generating capacity of the grid and a temporary increase in power rationing hours.
Civil defense teams managed to bring the fire under control, while the competent authorities announced that two people were injured and transported to receive treatment. Minister of Energy Mohammed al-Bashir said that the initial damage was concentrated in the gas pipelines and some electrical equipment and cables, confirming that determining the cause of the explosion will require the completion of cooling operations and a technical inspection of the site.
By Thursday morning, the authorities began gradually re-pumping gas toward the Deir Ali station, as a first step to restore part of the lost electrical capacity to the grid.
But the significance of the incident does not stop at the power outage. The explosion occurred just two days after a separate incident targeted a gas transmission pipeline between the al-Shoula area and Deir ez-Zor, which the Syrian Petroleum Corporation described as a “sabotage act.” Nevertheless, the authorities have not yet announced a link between the two incidents, nor have they determined whether the Tishreen explosion resulted from a technical malfunction or a deliberate act.
The shutdown of three stations due to the failure of a single gas pipeline reveals the extent of the interconnection between the gas and electricity systems in Syria, as major generation plants rely on a shared supply network, making any malfunction in this network capable of causing a wide impact that goes beyond the site of the incident itself.

And while restart operations have begun gradually, the most important question remains: was the Tishreen explosion a passing technical incident, or is Syria’s energy infrastructure facing a new wave of targeting?

The answer will depend on the results of the technical investigation, which have not yet been released.
