Loose Weapons Return to the Fore in Daraa as Tribal Clash Leaves Five Wounded in Inkhil

A tribal dispute in the city of Inkhil, in northern Daraa province, escalated on Friday, September 18, into an armed confrontation involving small arms and hand grenades, leaving five people wounded, including a child.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the widespread presence of weapons outside official state control in southern Syria.

According to preliminary reports, tensions began over a local tribal dispute before developing into an exchange of gunfire, accompanied by explosions caused by hand grenades inside the city.

Five people were injured in the clashes, including a child. Two of the wounded were reportedly in serious condition and were transferred to a hospital for treatment.

Internal security forces intervened in an effort to halt the fighting, contain the tensions, and prevent the violence from spreading to surrounding areas.

Local Disputes Turning into Armed Confrontations

The Inkhil incident does not appear to be isolated from the broader security situation in Daraa province, where several recent disputes and local altercations have quickly escalated into armed violence.

On September 16, the city of Jasim, also in northern Daraa, witnessed gunfire and the use of grenades following a dispute between two families.

Earlier this month, three people, including a child, were injured in the town of Kharab al-Shahm after gunfire erupted during a dispute involving members of two families.

In August alone, local sources documented several incidents in which firearms were used during personal disputes, tribal tensions, and social gatherings. These included the injury of a woman by a stray bullet during a tribal clash in the Lajat area, as well as other cases involving injuries caused by gunfire during disputes and celebrations.

The Legacy of War: When Weapons Remain After the Front Lines Disappear

These incidents raise a broader issue that goes beyond individual tribal disputes: the long-term security legacy of more than a decade of war and armed conflict in Syria.

Years of conflict contributed to the widespread proliferation of weapons, the emergence of multiple armed groups, and periods in which state institutions were unable to maintain an effective monopoly over the use of force.

The security consequences of civil wars do not end simply because major front lines fall silent.

One of the most serious challenges facing societies emerging from prolonged conflict is the continued presence of large quantities of weapons in the hands of individuals and local groups. Over time, weapons once used on battlefields may begin to appear in family disputes, tribal conflicts, personal arguments, and criminal activity.

In such an environment, a dispute that might otherwise be resolved through mediation, the courts, or local authorities can turn within minutes into an armed confrontation involving rifles and grenades.

The danger extends beyond the immediate parties to a dispute, as civilians and bystanders can become victims of stray bullets or indiscriminate gunfire. The repeated involvement of children and other civilians in such incidents in Daraa underscores the broader risks associated with uncontrolled weapons.

A Challenge for State-Building and the Rule of Law

Addressing the problem involves more than simply collecting weapons. It also requires effective security and judicial institutions that communities can rely on to resolve disputes, alongside long-term policies aimed at regulating unlicensed weapons, disarming or reintegrating former fighters, and strengthening the rule of law.

Without effective state control over the legitimate use of force, areas emerging from years of war may remain vulnerable to recurring cycles of localized violence even after major military confrontations have ended. What happened in Inkhil offers a small but revealing example of this broader challenge: a local dispute escalated into gunfire, grenades, and multiple injuries.

It is a reminder that one of the most difficult legacies of the Syrian war may not only be the destruction left behind, but also the weapons that remain in circulation long after the battlefronts have receded.
